**Small French Travel Case — c.1890–1910 (Belle Époque Period)

Sale price$650.00

History

A charming late 19th-century French travel case, likely made for private railway or carriage travel during the Belle Époque period — a time in France (roughly 1870–1914) marked by optimism, artistic innovation and beautifully crafted personal luxuries.

This style of trunk was practical yet elegant, designed for domestic journeys or the storage of personal effects aboard early rail lines. It features hand-applied brass banding, decorative nail-studded detailing and an oval motif to the lid, a classic hallmark of French and Belgian trunk makers between 1890 and 1910.

The original striped paper lining and red leather document pouch are typical of early French and English workshops before the later shift to printed canvas linings adopted by companies like Moynat and Louis Vuitton.

While unbranded, this example shares construction details seen in period pieces by Au Départ and Le Voyageur Paris, suggesting small-workshop manufacture in northern France around the turn of the century.
