History & Design
This superb pair of Flerline armchairs represents the golden era of Australian mid-century design. Produced by FLER Furniture, the Melbourne firm founded by Fred Lowen and Ernest Rodeck, the Flerline range was introduced in the early 1960s as part of FLER’s shift toward elegant, Scandinavian-influenced modernism. These chairs show the hallmarks of Lowen’s design philosophy — refined teak frames, tapered legs, and the distinctive angled backrest with deep-buttoned grid stitching. Their high-back comfort profile reflects post-war optimism and the move toward relaxed Australian living. Both chairs retain their factory labels, design registration plaques, and original upholstery — a softly mottled olive-green vinyl strongly associated with FLER’s 1960s palette. Surviving as an untouched matching pair in this condition is uncommon.
