c.1960s Danish Deluxe Wing Back Armchair — Melbourne, Australia
Era: 1960s
Origin: Melbourne, Australia
Materials: Solid teak legs, sculpted metal subframe, original flecked white upholstery
Description
A superb example of Australian mid-century design craftsmanship, this sculptural wing back armchair captures the clean lines and ergonomic contours typical of Danish Deluxe in the 1960s. The organically moulded seat features sweeping armrests, a distinctive rear cut-out, and a refined metal subframe that locks into the turned teak legs — a hallmark of Danish Deluxe’s engineering-led approach to comfort and aesthetics.
The textured off-white flecked upholstery appears original and presents beautifully. Its neutral tone pairs well with the warmth of the teak, creating a classic Scandinavian-inspired palette. Light wear and subtle tonal variations are present and consistent with age.
Attribution
This armchair is attributed to Danish Deluxe, Melbourne, based on multiple construction and design signatures unique to their 1960s output.
• The engineered metal underframe — including the spider-like junction and pressed metal collars at each leg — matches known Danish Deluxe systems used on the Ziva, Mareka, and Palisander series. No other Australian manufacturer employed this method.
• The leg profile, timber species, and flare angle are consistent with Danish Deluxe production of the era.
• The sculptural shell form, winged profile, and open-back detail align with low-production and non-catalogue designs the company produced for commercial interiors during the mid–late 1960s.
• The upholstery style and edge finishing match period-correct Danish Deluxe construction.
These features taken together strongly support Danish Deluxe manufacture, even though this exact model does not appear in surviving catalogues — not unusual for their prototype and limited-run designs.
