c.1960s Sleepy Hollow Lounge Suite — 2-Seater Sofa + Pair of Armchairs
Superb complete Sleepy Hollow suite comprising a rare 2-seater sofa plus a matching pair of armchairs, all in original white vinyl with button-tufted backs and voluptuous, low-slung curves. Full suites like this are scarce survivors of Australian modernist design; very few remain intact, and even fewer in this condition.
History & Design
The Sleepy Hollow form emerged in Australia during the early–mid 1960s as local makers began embracing softer, more sculptural silhouettes that broke away from the sharper Danish-inspired lines of the decade. These pieces captured the era’s shift toward relaxed lounge seating — wider proportions, deep comfort, and bold, organic curves designed to anchor a modern living room.
This suite shows the classic Sleepy Hollow profile: sweeping arms that flow into a continuous seat line, generous button-tufted backs, and a low-slung stance that gives it presence without heaviness. The original white vinyl is typical of the period’s confident use of light, reflective surfaces in interior spaces. Surviving as a complete matched suite — and still in its factory upholstery — is exceptionally uncommon and a testament to careful ownership over decades.
Condition
• Original vinyl: bright, supple, no splits or brittleness visible
• Buttons & stitching: firm and intact across backs and arms
• Frames: solid, stable, with deep and supportive seating comfort
• Wear: minimal; presents exceptionally well for age
