Designer: Norman Archibald
Era: Mid-20th century
Origin: Australia
Dimensions (overall): 82 cm (H) × 150 cm (W) × 74 cm (D)
Description
A rare and distinctive example of Australian mid-century seating design, this two-seat sofa by Norman Archibald is formed from a pair of modular lounge chairs configured side-by-side. The design reflects the period’s emphasis on flexibility, comfort, and exposed construction — prioritising relaxed seating and honest materials over rigid formality.
Each section features a robust timber frame with visible joinery and generously padded chocolate brown leather cushions, creating a low, grounded profile with strong architectural presence. The modular nature allows the piece to be appreciated both as a two-seat arrangement or as individual lounge chairs if desired.
The original leather has been carefully refreshed and conditioned with Elephant Leather Preserver, widely regarded as a gold-standard product for the care and long-term preservation of vintage leather, improving suppleness and longevity.
The timber frames have been cleaned and finished with a light application of hard wax, enriching the grain while respecting the original surface.
Condition
• Leather: Original chocolate brown leather with age-appropriate creasing and patina; refreshed and well cared for. Excellent overall condition.
• Timber: Cleaned and hard-waxed; minor marks and scuffs consistent with age. Excellent condition for age.
• Structure: Frames solid and structurally sound
• Comfort: Cushions remain supportive and comfortable
Overall, both sofas presents very well and wears their age beautifully.
