Leonetto Cappiello — “Cachou Lajaunie” Advertising Poster (Devambez, Paris)

Original early-20th-century French advertising poster by Leonetto Cappiello for Cachou Lajaunie pastilles. Printed in colour lithography by Devambez, Paris, this is a classic example of Cappiello’s bold, modern approach to poster design — simplified forms, strong colour and immediate visual impact. The image is signed in the stone lower left, as expected for authentic period prints.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) is widely regarded as the father of modern advertising poster design. Working primarily in Paris in the early 1900s, he transformed commercial poster art by moving away from detailed narrative scenes toward striking figures set against dark backgrounds, designed to catch the eye instantly. His posters for brands such as Campari, Picon, Maurin Quina and Cachou Lajaunie are now among the most sought-after examples of classic French advertising art.

Cachou Lajaunie is one of Cappiello’s most recognisable designs and remains highly collectible. This is a full-size sheet, not a reduction.

Condition
Framed behind clear acrylic and not examined out of frame. The poster appears to have been fully laid down to a paper (or paper-covered) support. Original margins of approximately 3.5–4 cm are retained outside the printed area. Inspection through the acrylic indicates good overall condition, with only occasional very slight and inconspicuous surface blemishes consistent with age. The frame shows light scuffs and surface dirt.
