🧊 Hatsuyuki “First Snow” Ice Shaver — Japan c. 1948–1952 (Flat-Plate Scenic Model)

Sale price$765.00

Description
A hand-cranked marvel from post-war Japan — the rare early Hatsuyuki 初雪 (“First Snow”) ice shaver featuring a high-relief Mount Fuji and harbor casting, ornate TRADE MARK arch, and flat brass deck (predating the later bowl-base designs). Cast in iron and hand-painted in soft blue with red script detailing, it captures the optimistic industrial artistry of the early Shōwa era.

This example is mechanically complete and the crank turns smoothly, gears engage cleanly. It has been cleaned and waxed, leaving the authentic paint and patina untouched.

The flat-plate design was quickly phased out by Hatsuyuki in favor of fixed brass bowls, making this one of the earliest and most collectible variants. Fewer than one in ten surviving hand-crank units feature this open brass deck, which allowed shavings to fall directly into a wooden or enamel bowl placed beneath.
