Dogon Mask Form with Surmounted Female Figure, Mali c. 1950s-1970s
A carved timber Dogon mask form from Mali, surmounted by a female figure and mounted on a custom metal stand.
The piece has a strong vertical presence, combining a mask form with an over-figure in a single sculptural composition. The carving shows visible age wear and patina that reflect its material and history rather than decoration.
Animal-like features sometimes described as “rabbit” appear in stylised form, typical of Dogon visual language, which favours abstraction over literal representation. This should be understood as a collected sculptural object rather than a documented performance mask.
Likely made mid–late 20th century, approximately the 1950s–1970s.
