Atomic Coffee Maker — Mid-20th Century, Hungarian Made
An original Atomic coffee maker, manufactured in Hungary in the mid-20th century and stamped “Atomic – Iparilag Gyártott – Made in Hungary.” Compact, sculptural and unmistakably of its era, the Atomic is one of the most recognisable domestic espresso makers to emerge from post-war Central Europe. Cast in aluminium with black bakelite handles and fittings, it reflects the optimism of the period — practical engineering wrapped in confident modern design.
Produced from the late 1940s through the 1960s, the Atomic became widely distributed across Europe and export markets. While often compared to Italian stovetop machines, it stands apart for its distinctive form and its place within Eastern European industrial design history. Complete and well-presented examples like this are increasingly sought after by collectors of mid-century coffee equipment.
This example presents well, with the aluminium body retaining its original surface finish and honest age wear. The maker’s mark is clearly visible. Bakelite handles and knobs are intact. The portafilter with internal screen is present, along with the matching milk jug. No modern polishing or restoration has been carried out. Condition is consistent with age and displays very well.
Hungarian manufacture, mid-20th century. Original period coffee equipment.
