Antique “Neverbreak” Steamer Trunk by J. Goldsmith & Son (c. 1910–1925)
**Recovered from Essendon Convent, Victoria**
History
Built in New Jersey by J. Goldsmith & Son, makers of the tough-as-nails Neverbreak line, this early 20th-century trunk was designed for real travel — long sea passages, steam-train journeys and the kind of rough handling that only old ports and customs sheds could deliver.
This example spent decades at the Essendon convent, likely stored away after many years of service. It now wears every mark of its past with honesty — weathered timber slats, oxidised hardware and that unmistakable sense of lived history.
Features
- Timber-slat and steel construction with brass-plated locks and corner caps
- Maker’s brass plaque: “Neverbreak Trunks – J. Goldsmith & Son – Newark NJ USA”
- Original ribbed-paper interior lining
- Riveted frame for strength and rigidity
- Handles absent; one rear slat broken — consistent with a trunk that has travelled widely
