James Northfield — Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. Large Format, Linen backed
Early post-war Australian travel poster, c. late 1940s–early 1950s
A superb large format Australian travel poster by celebrated commercial artist James Northfield, produced for the Australian National Publicity Association to promote Canberra. Printed in Melbourne by McLaren’s using early photo-mechanical offset lithography, it shows the new Parliament House set within the emerging ACT landscape. This edition predates the later ANTA reissues and carries the original McLaren’s and Publicity Association credits.
Northfield’s post-war posters captured the optimism of a modernising Australia, and this Canberra design remains one of his most sought-after compositions.
