Heute Bock (c.1880s–1890s) — Original German Chromolithographic Advertising Poster
A superb example of late-19th-century German beer advertising, depicting a moustached innkeeper toasting a frothing stein with a spirited bock goat — the traditional mascot of strong seasonal spring beer. Printed using multi-stone chromolithography, this poster shows the rich, tactile colour and hand-drawn shading typical of the period. The lithographer’s mark (“C.A.W.”) and plate number 407 at the lower margin are consistent with commercial brewery prints from Munich or northern Germany in the 1880s–1890s.
Produced before offset printing became standard, this poster retains the character of true stone lithography — layered colour, irregular linework, and textured transitions visible under magnification. No halftone or dot-rosette pattern is present.
Condition
Period paper with visible toning and a light horizontal fold across the centre. Small area of movement along the central seam, stable within the frame. Strong, well-preserved pigment density with natural softening from age. Light vertical creases and one minor horizontal fold typical of chromolithographs of this age. Presented in a modern timber frame with mount; not examined out of frame. Overall Good / Antique condition with stable paper and strong visual impact.
